The University of Washington Tacoma was founded in 1990, however the campus was not permantenly established until 1997. The rennovation of six historical buildings in Downtown Tacoma led to the begining of a campus that would grow to be 46 acres. The original six buildings on which the foundation of the campus was built around are Garretson Woodruff Pratt, Birmingham Block, Brimingham Hay & Seed, West Coast Grocery, Walsh Gardner, Tioga, Snoqualmine.
When fully built out, UWT will occupy 46 acres downtown between 17th and 21st streets and Pacific and Tacoma avenues. Currently the campus only uses one-third of its footprint, with most buildings wedged between Pacific and Jefferson avenues from 17th to 21st.
