In Washington State:

As of 2013 one in seven people (14.1 percent) live below the poverty line.  This is up from 13.5 percent in 2012.  For a family of three, the poverty line is defined as earning less than $19,530 per year.

As a whole, the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area had a lower poverty rate (12.6 percent) than the state.

Tacoma, WA:

Kid Density

Children are some of the most vulnerable populations to income inequality and the negatives affects that my result from low income levels. To analyize children density in Tacoma data from the 2012 US Census Bureau Pierce County Block Groups was used to identify all children who were under the age of ten at the time that the census was taken. Then we took this number and divided it by square miles to determine the kid density within the city of Tacoma.

      Median Income

To analyize median income in Tacoma data from the 2012 US Census Bureau Pierce County Block Groups was used to identify the median income of those who were living within the city. Both results use an IDW analysis

IDW Analysis:

"Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things."

IDW interpolation takes the idea that "near things are more related than distant things" to predict a value for any unmeasured location. IDW uses the measured sample points that surround an unmeasured location and gives greater weight to the measured sample points that are within close proximity to the unmeasured location. The weight given to the smaple points is a function of distance, and will decrease the farther away it is from a given location.
